Matthew Baskott – Gestalt Psychotherapist (UKCP Trainee Psychotherapist)

Matthew Boskott - Gestalt Psychotherapist

About Me

Hi, I am Matthew, and my pronouns are he/him. I offer short-term and ongoing one-to-one psychotherapy for adults. I am also an established group psychotherapist running personal development groups for Mind in Camden.

I practice Gestalt therapy, a holistic and existential approach to life, and am currently in advanced clinical training working towards full accreditation with the UKCP.

There are many reasons people seek therapy, all of them valid.

You might sense something missing in your life and relationships. You might think you get in your way because you do not feel confident or have anxiety or self-doubt. You might struggle alone with something but believe you don’t deserve the space to talk about it, that simply by acknowledging your needs, you will be taking away from an imagined other whose problems far outweigh your own.

The belief that we are not good enough is a strong pull which can keep us silent in our suffering.

Gianni Francesetti (2015), a therapist whose writings I admire, states, “suffering is not pain but an absence” of another. This absent other(s) does not only mean someone is physically distant but emotionally.

Healing happens in and between relationships, and I revere the therapeutic relationship as a space where I commit to being fully present for you, no matter how you show up.

My background

I have managed community mental health services for the past seven years and can accept clients who may experience severe and distressing mental health adaptations.

I spent two years as a counsellor for London’s longest-running LGBTQIA+ charity, where I developed sensitivity to the unique experiences of people who express themselves through gender, sexual and relationship diversity.

Alongside my therapeutic work, I write for film and theatre, and I bring my creativity to the therapeutic relationship through image work, metaphors, fantasy, play and drama.

When used appropriately, these tools can help us cut through the narratives we tell ourselves and uncover a deeper truth.

What I offer

I work with an array of experiences, including:

– Anxiety
– Depression and sadness
– Low self-esteem and low confidence
– Relationships and dating, including dating apps
– Sexuality, including coming out
– Complex mental health diagnoses, such as psychosis, schizophrenia, personality configurations
– Identity
– Loss of meaning
– Work stress and burn-out
– Worries about sex
– Trauma
– Self / other oppression dynamics such as homophobia, racism, misogyny, religious persecution, bullying
And many more…

I work in the here and now, believing that whatever you are struggling with will emerge between you and me at some point during therapy, granting us direct access to how you experience your situation.

My role is to support and challenge you enough to be aware of the process so you can fully know yourself. With that knowledge, you choose how to be.
