Maria Boghiu – Accredited Psychotherapist (UKCP, BACP)
About me
My first career was in writing software. My second career was in startups, specifically being on the founding team of a mental health startup that I’m happy to report is still working with over 500 companies to give people free access to therapy as a work benefit. I’ve been in the mental health space for over 7 years and in clinical practice for 5+ years.
About my practice
I draw on scientific psychology as well as other traditions such as philosophy, literature, art. I favour time-limited work, so I work best with people who are happy to do some work outside sessions.
Labels that describe my practice: existential, phenomenological, integrative. Integrative means I draw on ideas & techniques outside my core modality. Phenomenological means we try to put precise words to vague and murky feelings, on the idea that “language lays down tracks upon which thoughts can travel” (Dan Dennett). Existential means we’d talk about meaning & values, freedom & purpose, choice & responsibility—in other words, what you do with what’s been done to you. We need not talk about childhood unless it’s relevant. (It often is.)
In our sessions, I’ll ask clarifying questions, so by helping me understand what’s going on, you come to understand it better yourself. I can offer relevant insights from philosophy, psychotherapy, and scientific psychology. Now and then, I’ll suggest something to read or reflect on in your own time. That’s because changing how you feel is like learning a new language: taking a course gets you some of the way there, but you won’t become fluent unless you practice all the time.
My particular interests are:
- anxiety, managing ADHD
- loss, grief, loneliness, difficulty connecting with others
- shame, impostor syndrome, low self-confidence, overworking
- coping with change—moving, changing or losing work, breaking up
- coping with transitions—parenthood, retirement, illness, bereavement
- and working with people who are new to therapy
