What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy uses various techniques such as relaxation, focused attention and awareness to bring about a trance-like state for the purpose of changing habits, thought patterns and behaviours.

Your trained hypnotherapist will guide you through these states in a safe and calm environment.

How does hypnotherapy work?

A typical session will start with a process which brings about a deep sense of relaxation. This will help you clear your mind and be more open to suggestions for the purpose of understanding your fears, problems and unwanted habits.

The hypnotherapist acts as a supporter and advisor during the session and will help you resolve issues in a positive way. Sometimes the therapist will incorporate cognitive behavioural techniques to understand and change negative habitual patterns.

The trance state will allow your awareness to come into sharper focus and may help you understand a problem more deeply and intimately.

Your therapist will help guide and reassure you throughout the session so that you feel safe and that no harm may come to you.

Hypnotherapy is well researched and has been proven to work in many clinical trials over the years.

What are the benefits of hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy can be used as a stand-alone, or supplementary therapy in combination with other forms of therapy, partly because the hypnotic state allows for more openness and suggestiveness which can often provide a halo-like affect.

Hypnotherapy can be used for the following conditions:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Grief or loss
  • Insomnia and sleeping disorders
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Low confidence or self esteem
  • Pain relief or chronic pain conditions
  • Phobias and fears
  • Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Stop smoking
  • Stress
  • Tinnitus
  • Trauma and abuse
  • Weight loss
  • And much more…
  • Note: if you are experiencing pain or physical illness, please consult with your GP first.

We have several hypnotherapists in Hackney, East London that operate at our centre and they can help with all of the above issues.

What happens during hypnotherapy?

Like therapy with a counsellor or psychotherapist, your first session will normally involve a discussion about what your goals are and what you would like to achieve from your time together.

Your hypnotherapist will then explain their way of working, ask questions that may help with subsequent sessions, explore some of the problems you may have presented, and answer any questions you may have.

They will then slowly lead you into a deep and relaxed state before working to help you towards your goals. Towards the end of the session you will gradually be taken out of the trance-like state and brought back into everyday awareness.

Should I be worried about being hypnotised?

Unlike the stereotypical stage performances, you will always be in control and if you do not want to follow any of the therapist’s suggestions or cues, then you will be free to decide yourself.

You will be fully awake and conscious throughout the session, remember everything that you want to remember, and you will also be able to bring yourself out of the hypnotic state.

Hypnosis does not cause you to lose control; you will be in complete control throughout.

If you decide that you do not want to be hypnotised, then you cannot be hypnotised.

Research has shown that most people are able to be hypnotised and only around 10% of the population are either impossible or very difficult to hypnotise.
