Elena Xenophontos – Clinical Psychologist
About me
My name is Elena Xenophontos, and I am a qualified Clinical Psychologist with 15 years of experience working in mental health services with adults, children, couples, families, and carers with a variety of difficulties and presentations. As a Clinical Psychologist, I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), registering body for applied psychologists.
Growing up I recall, the stories my grandmother shared with me, she always had a story to share, whilst every time she wanted to ‘teach’ me something this would be through stories. As a psychologist, I am interested in my clients’ stories, what makes some stories more important than others, why some stories get chosen to be shared and others do not, as well as the power these narratives have on our lives. Narratives are fundamental in therapy, with the core principle of therapy being to support clients identify their strengths, values, principles, and goals in life. Through therapy, the aim would be to improve client’s overall well-being, improve their relationships and support people to feel empowered to face any challenges they might be experiencing.
At the core of my practice is the recognition that the context in which we live impacts our narratives and views of ourselves and others. Our experiences can sometimes be traumatising and the systems we operate within might be contributing to our difficulties, such as experiences of discrimination based on ethnicity, gender, culture, religion, sexuality etc. Central to my practice would be to offer a safe space to allow for such difficulties to be explored.
My practice compromises an integration of relational, psychodynamic and attachment-based principles as well as more present-focused approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). I have also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing) therapy. I strive to adapt my practice to meet the needs of the person I work with to achieve their goals.
I can offer support to people who struggle with their mood (e.g. anxiety, depression, anger), or who have a history of trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as well as people who experience difficulties in relationships with others and who are struggling with how they perceive themselves. I can also offer support to people who are going through significant life changes and who are looking to find their direction in life or who are interested to understand themselves better.
I offer therapy face-to-face, however, upon request I can offer remote therapy over video. I can offer therapy in English and Greek.
Getting Started
You can contact me through email ([email protected]). You can either send me a brief description of what you are seeking and any relevant information you think would be important for me to know before arranging an appointment. We can also arrange a free 20-minute conversation to explore any questions you might have before arranging an appointment.
During the first appointment, we will have an opportunity to get to know each other and discuss the reasons why you are pursuing therapy as well as what you would like to get out of therapy. The initial sessions will focus on an assessment and formulation of what you are experiencing, which will guide the focus of treatment and all subsequent sessions.
