My name is Emel Kahraman and I am a qualified Integrative Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist. I also offer Reflective Parenting sessions as well as individual therapy for adults.
My background is in puppetry, so my journey of working with children has always followed a creative path. I now use different methods in my therapy practice, whether it is art, play, metaphors in storytelling or symbols in sand to help children make sense of their overwhelming feelings or difficult experiences. I believe that compassion, empathy and the alliance between the therapist and the client are the key in the therapeutic change.
The integrative element of my approach means I am able to use different therapy approaches and tailor those to each individual’s strengths and needs. My framework will always include neuroscientific understanding of attachment and trauma, psychodynamic and humanistic therapies, and cognitive elements such as psycho-education.
I have experience working with clients on various issues affecting their well-being, including developmental trauma, abuse, depression, anxiety, anger, selective mutism, eating disorders, PTSD, self-esteem, loss and bereavement, self-harm, divorce and separation, family conflict, behavioural problems.
In Reflective Parenting sessions, my starting point will always be you know your child best. However, sometimes we all need some space and a different perspective to understand the difficulties the children are experiencing. My aim is to provide that non-judgemental space to help you strengthen your skills in understanding the inner world of your child. You may need this support when your child is a baby or they are about to leave home, and anywhere in between.
I welcome any home educating parents and carers who may feel worried about approaching processionals as sometimes your family’s lawful choice of how to educate your children is confused as a safeguarding issue. I am compassionate about changing this confusion in the mental health sector.
I hold an MA in Integrative Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy. My UKCP membership is at the last stages of trainee membership before it becomes a full membership (experiencing delays due to the impact of lockdown).
Languages: English and Turkish.
To book your first appointment please send an email with a brief explanation of your reasons for seeking therapy at this point or ask me any questions you may have about the therapy process.
Alternatively I can offer a 20 minute free phone consultation to discuss these.
Before I start working with a child, I would meet the parent/s without the child for a minimum 90 minutes session where I will ask about early years, current problems, I will explain how I work and how to explain therapy to your child.
Appointments are offered at Space To Be You Therapy Rooms in Hackney (E8) on Saturdays.
